This book is a powerful polemic addressing the spiritual malaise of the American church in our chaotic contemporary culture。 The author gives voice to the what many feel but cannot quite articulate。 Eric Metaxas has written biographies on Martin Luther, William Wilberforce, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, so he has spent a good deal of his life investigating the church's response in tumultuous times。 In this short volume he applies those lessons to the modern American church。 Are we similar to the Germ This book is a powerful polemic addressing the spiritual malaise of the American church in our chaotic contemporary culture。 The author gives voice to the what many feel but cannot quite articulate。 Eric Metaxas has written biographies on Martin Luther, William Wilberforce, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, so he has spent a good deal of his life investigating the church's response in tumultuous times。 In this short volume he applies those lessons to the modern American church。 Are we similar to the German Lutheran church of Nazi Germany in the early 1930's who failed to proactively stand against the encroaching evil? Where exactly did they go wrong? What are we doing differently? Are the parallels between the American church in our times and the German church in theirs merely superficial or do they reflect our core commitments? Which of his statements do you disagree with? What insights are useful? The continuing challenge for American Christians in these times is - to what degree do I act on political, social, and economic issues that are threatening our nation? Am I willing to face the consequences of my actions, even if they affront friends, family, the government, and, yes, maybe even fellow Christians? If I avoid the confrontations and refrain from action, am I then complicit in strengthening those threats? If I avoid the confrontations and refrain from action, am I then complicit in strengthening those threats? In Metaxas's book, this dynamic tension is examined with logic and passion, referencing Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his German Church's struggles with the emerging German National Socialists (Nazis) as the template。 The tone is thoughtful, urgent, and personally challenging。 The arguments are supported by history and extrapolated to what may be directly relevant to our times。 Are we seeing an echo of Germany in the early 1930's; are we in the Church facing a frighteningly similar challenge? If you're unsettled by these questions and uncertain whether to act or remain quietly "religious", Letter to the American Church lays out a case for action - logically, historically, and theologically。 I would have preferred a long-form essay format in lieu of 14 chapters, but none the less, in the end, there is impact and a direct personal challenge to clarify the choices before us。 。。。more

Does history repeat itself? How can I discuss a previous generation without looking and comparing my generation? A Letter to the American Church opens eyes and conversation by looking at the past actions of people and comparing it to present times。 Silence is not honorable or right。 We must know the truth and speak truth in our time。

Will it become, yes, decidedly political, and speak truth to power, resistance to tyrants, and give voice to the voiceless? Metaxas highlights primarily the conditions in Germany that preceded the rise of the Third Reich。 Bonhoeffer tried to warn the Church, to sound the alarm of what was on the horizon。 The Church then, as today, yawned, complied or retreated, quoted Romans 13, and told the outspoken to be quiet。 The thrust of the book, furthermore, is that we today have the benefit of history, and definitive documentation of what horrors can ensue when the Church doesn’t respond to evil。 The parallels are frightening, and the call to action is clear。 But will the Church of today heed that call?Well-written, compelling, and urgent, this book should be read by every church leader, and anyone else who dares to stare into the face of what was and still could be。 。。。more

Isn’t ignoring evil allowing it to grow and hurt other people? Doesn’t our richness in being saved allow us to bring not only the good news of Jesus but also the good news because of Jesus to others? Obviously the evil that is so prevalent in our society is threatening our belief system。 The day is coming that we will no longer be free to worship。 How is that a good thing? Losing our religious freedoms means losing all our freedoms。Last year I joined a church in Leesburg, Virginia that has since made national news for taking a stand against evil。 While at my initial membership class, I met others like me, who left their former churches for the same reason I left mine。 People are hungry for truth。 People want hope。 They do not want tyranny。 When I homeschooled my youngest in his senior year of high school, we took our 20th century history studies into a deep dive into Dietrich Bonhoeffer。 After reading Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship, we read Eric Metaxas massive biography on Bonhoeffer。 Both books were hugely impactful in my life as well as my son’s。 My son quickly took to facebook quoting Bonhoeffer, and often continues to do so, today。 So did I。 Amazingly, many of these quotes are right in line with Metaxas’ newest book。 A Letter to the American Church is timely essential reading in light of the current culture wars which are explicitly designed to wipe out the church, often times with the help from many of the American churches。Since I was the recipient of an advanced review copy of A Letter to the American Church by Eric Metaxas, I was asked to write public reviews on the book based on my personal opinion。 Following are my favorite book quotes from Metaxas’ book。Metaxas reminds us of the church view on politics on the eve of our Independence:“…pastors in the eighteenth century spoke boldly from their colonial pulpits against the tyranny of King George III, and opposed him by name。” -Eric Metaxas, A Letter to the American ChurchContrast that with the political position of the church in the 1950s: In the 1950s the Johnson Amendment was enacted, prohibiting churches and other non-profits from taking a public stand in political candidates。 Which churches fought the passage of that amendment? “It is astonishing that pastors in America allowed this wild idea to go uncontested。 In this they behaved rather like many of the submissive pastors in Germany two decades earlier。” -Eric Metaxas, A Letter to the American Church“…Bonhoeffer could somehow see what lay ahead, and knew the concessions the church was making would be fatal in the years to come。 He knew that in their ignorance, silence, inaction, and theological confusion they were not only helping evil gain a foothold, but were lending evil a helping hand。” -Eric Metaxas, A Letter to the American ChurchThus, Bonhoeffer likened the inaction of the church to fight evil with the term, cheap grace:“I can go and sin as much as I like, and rely on this grace to forgive me, for after all the world is justified in principle by grace。 I can therefore cling to my bourgeois secular existence, and remain as I was before, with the added assurance that the grace of God will cover me。 It is under the influence of this kind of ‘grace’ that the world has been made ‘Christian,’ but at the cost of secularizing the Christian religion as never before。 The antithesis between the Christian life and the life of the burgeois respectability is at and end。 The Christian life comes to mean nothing more than living in the world and as the world, in being no different from the world, in fact, in being prohibited from being different from the world for the sake of grace。 The upshot of it all is that my only duty as a Christian is to leave the world for an hour so on a Sunday morning and go to church to be assured my sins are all forgiven。 I need no longer try to follow Christ, for cheap grace, the bitterest foe of discipleship, which true discipleship must loath and detest, has freed me from that。” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipThus the purpose of Eric Metaxas’ book is clear:“Dietrich Bonhoeffer…called the German church to be the church in their time, and as I hope to make clear, his voice to them is his voice to us today, calling the American Church to actually be God’s church, with all that entails, so that we might avoid the mistakes of the German church in the 1930s, and those direst consequences we know to have been their result。 But let’s face it: what God usually asks of His people is that they actually live out their faith in all the spheres of their lives so that all of society is blessed。 And when they fail to do this, they are failing to be the Church。” -Eric Metaxas, A Letter to the American Church 。。。more

I found this book to be a refreshing commentary on the current state of our culture and what can be done by Clergy and Congregants to set us on a better path。 The Message, Apologetics, and Challenge to each individual Pastor are simple, clear and brilliant。 This message is long over due for the American Church。 The challenge to each of us is; Dare I ignore history? Do I have the Courage to follow Bonhoeffer? Am I Christian enough to follow Christ? I am gifting copies of this book my clergy and t I found this book to be a refreshing commentary on the current state of our culture and what can be done by Clergy and Congregants to set us on a better path。 The Message, Apologetics, and Challenge to each individual Pastor are simple, clear and brilliant。 This message is long over due for the American Church。 The challenge to each of us is; Dare I ignore history? I’ve been prescient about two major events in this new millennium。 The first was in 2004, when a charismatic Barak Obama was introduced to the world stage at the 2004 Democratic National Convention。 I knew immediately that he would captivate the hearts and minds of many。 Four years later he embarked upon his fundamental transformation of the United States。 The second was 2010 when I read the biography and prophecy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer。 I clearly saw the parallels between 1930s Germany and the I’ve been prescient about two major events in this new millennium。 The first was in 2004, when a charismatic Barak Obama was introduced to the world stage at the 2004 Democratic National Convention。 I knew immediately that he would captivate the hearts and minds of many。 Four years later he embarked upon his fundamental transformation of the United States。 The second was 2010 when I read the biography and prophecy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer。 I clearly saw the parallels between 1930s Germany and the path America was on at that time。 It’s twelve years hence and the Marxist transformation is almost complete。 Thus is the cost of our silence within the community of faith。 “A Letter to the American Church” is Eric Metaxas’ clarion call for the body of Christ to stand in God’s mighty power and and confront these forces of evil with His truth and righteousness。 God’s church stands as the only bulwark between the free and the enslaved。 Stand we must。 Silence is no longer an option。 Eric’s “Letter” is an eleventh hour alarm。 Read it, heed it and share it! 。。。more

This book is a must read and a call to action。 It is a Gospel message of urgency that must be heeded。 Do not read it in isolation but share it with friends。 We are living in an age of censorship that must be countered and requires fearlessness。

American churches have a responsibility to speak up in the face of evil because God’s truth and love must be applied beyond the Church。 In “A Letter to the American Church”, Eric Metaxas directs the reader to consider bold and courageous heroes: King David, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, William Wilburforce and President Ronald Reagan。 These men knew and acted on God’s truth while ignoring the opposing voices。 Despite Bonhoeffer’s prophetic warning to the German Church in the 1930s, the Church failed to a American churches have a responsibility to speak up in the face of evil because God’s truth and love must be applied beyond the Church。 In “A Letter to the American Church”, Eric Metaxas directs the reader to consider bold and courageous heroes: King David, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, William Wilburforce and President Ronald Reagan。 These men knew and acted on God’s truth while ignoring the opposing voices。 Despite Bonhoeffer’s prophetic warning to the German Church in the 1930s, the Church failed to act。 Eric asks the question, “Will we learn from past mistakes?” and points out that if the American Church does not appropriate freedom of speech on every topic, then all Americans are not truly free。 Eric highlights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s which began to silence many churches。 As a result of their silence, we are now faced with anti-God and anti-human ideologies, including radical transgender, pro-abortion, and atheist Marxist Critical Race Theory。 Eric’s informative book humbly presents the evidence of our current crisis, the spiritual battle between God’s truth and Satan’s lies, and challenges readers to take action。 。。。more
